Oh boy. I saw Romulus over its opening weekend, and while I enjoyed the first two acts, mostly, I felt the end really fizzled badly. I could not care less about the big bad for the final act, feelings that were just reinforced by my burning dislike of Prometheus. And then learning that the legacy character was made using generative AI... I mean, it looked awful while I was watching it, now I regret spending money on it. All that said, the two lead actors were astonishing, with David Jonsson being especially impressive.

I won’t deny, it did look rough. My understanding was this was done with a combination of traditional 3d visual effects and deep fake machine learning. Similar to what was done at ILM on Indiana Jones and for Luke on Mando and Book of Boba Fett.

I’m not AI expert, but the tech behind Generative AI itself is not evil, but what is wrong is stealing art to train the machine learning models. The Hollywood Reporter article I read mentioned that Ian’s family gave consent in the use of his likeness.

The ending was pretty nuts, for sure.

Im not a huge fan of AI myself, and I am 100% against generative AI art that is made from stolen art, but I also don’t think everything that uses AI is morally wrong.
