I’m sure Mike Mignola does not need me to tell anyone reading this that he is the iconic creator of Hellboy and the ever expanding universe surrounding Hellboy and the B.P.R.D.
Last year a hour and half documentary was made about him and his work on Hellboy, called Mike Mignola: Drawing Monsters and it is currently FREE on youtube. If you are a creative person you need to watch it, if you are a fan of Hellboy and Mike Mignola you need to watch it, so go watch it.
I learned so much about this creator, especially his early life and career. It was all very inspiring and made me want to keep working at my SpaceCat comics. In fact the next day , I woke up early and inked a good chunk of a page of SpaceCat before regular work started.
Here is a little panel from that SpaceCat page:
I learned that in their young careers Mike Mignola was friends and neighbours with Steve Purcell, known for Sam & Max, and a long career at Pixar, as well as comic artist Arthur Adams. I had picked up a Sam and Max trade paperback back in the 90s, and was always a fan. It was wacky and the art was so slick and inky. I later learned that he was an animator, story artist, and director at Pixar.
Here is a quick flip through of my Sam & Max book:
I may be showing my ignorance here, but I learned that Mignola really found his voice when he wrote and drew issue 54 of Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight. It looks fantastic, and I’d love to read it sometime.
This was not featured in the Drawing Monsters documentary, but worth showing. Did you know that Mike Mignola did this rad Aliens: Salvation book?
All this reminds me of a moment I always regretted at WonderCon in LA, probably 15 years ago. Mike Mignola was tabling there and for some reason, at the time i was there, nobody was at his table. I wanted to chat with him, but at the time, I must admit, i did not know his work well, and chickened out on starting a conversation. I always wish I had just talked to him, b/c every other time I’ve seen him at a show he was swamped with fans.
Well, that just about does it for now.
Thank you all for taking the time. Do any of you read Hellboy? Let me know what you think of the Drawing Monsters doc if you watch it.
Oh, one last thing. I’m starting to really get into TTRPGs. Especially smaller indie, non-5e ones. Anyone out there also a fan? Maybe something for a future newsletter. :)
See ya,
Ed
Yeah, the Mignola doc is great. He also did the movie adaptation of Coppola's Dracula. You can find copies on ebay.
The doc was great. I need to watch it again. I always find it funny when comic artists talk about the 80's and 90's saying "I couldn't really draw but I hung out in the lobby long enough, they just started giving me work."
